Iceberg: Dust Jacket Illustration
By Bruce Kenfield
Donya Melanson Associates (DMA) was founded in August 1968 as woman-owned
business-a rarity at the time. Donya was an illustrator and designer
who had worked for a number of years as Art Director for the advertising
department of textbook publisher, D.C. Heath and Company, headquartered
in Boston, Massachusetts. When Raytheon bought Heath, her department
was dissolved. At this same time, Donya had been providing freelance
illustration for International Paper Company (IP) in New York. Her
contact at IP encouraged her to start off her own, getting the ball
rolling by giving her enough work to sustain DMA initially. Since
Donya was already commuting to New York for IP, Donya started selling
her services to book publishers, one of them being Dodd, Mead, &
Company. more...
